  7.     A splashy musical inspired by a dead tycoon who pilfered
  8. close to $1 billion from worker pension funds has all the
  9. resounding appeal of a cute romantic comedy based on Hitler and
  10. Eva Braun. And yet where one man sees morbidity, another sees
  11. dizzying opportunity. Welcome to Maxwell: The Musical, the
  12. latest brainchild of British producer and former ROBERT MAXWELL
  13. colleague Evan Steadman. Expected to open in London next year,
  14. the play will follow Maxwell's rise from a shoeless Czech lad
  15. to his fall from grace as England's reigning tabloid baron. All
  16. that drama and the songs of Gilbert and Sullivan to boot. Says
  17. Steadman of his days with Cap'n Bob: "I saw so much chicanery,
  18. hilarity and mirth that I said, `This will make a great
  19. musical.' " A wacky idea? Sure, admits Steadman, but "Maxwell
  20. was an extraordinary man -- villain, vagabond, thief, of course,
  21. but a remarkable villain, vagabond, thief."
